2008 Champions’ Week Winds Up With Annual Awards Ceremony

A busy week in New York City culminated Friday evening with the annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards Ceremony at the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel.
Jimmie Johnson, who etched his name in the NASCAR record books by becoming only the second driver in the sport’s history to win three consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships, was officially coronated as the 2008 series titlist.

1984: LeeRoy Yarbrough, named one of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers in 1998, dies on this day in Jacksonville, Fla. In 198 starts from 1960 to 1972 (he never came close to running a full season), Yarbrough won 14 races. His best season was 1969 when he won seven times in 31 starts with 21 top 10s and 16 top fives. Among his wins in 1969 were the Daytona 500, World 600 and Southern 500. He swept both races at Daytona and Darlington that year.

70: Laps led by Ryan Newman in 2008, his fewest in his seven seasons as a full-time driver in the Cup series. His previous low was 125 in 2006. When Newman was rookie of the year in 2002, he led 753 laps.
